A Day in the Life of.....
This is where us bloggers & fans get a glimpse inside the days of our favorite authors!
I live in a southern Virginia on a working goat farm with my husband, who I lovingly call Mr. Mike (that’s a long story), and two big ol’ drooly Labrador retrievers. At any given time we have a few hundred breeding does on our farm and we’re coming up on kidding season. Since most of our does will have twins—there’ll be a lot of hopping and chasing on our farm pretty soon.
It’s fun being married to a goat rancher, and we enjoy living out here in the country where we can grow our own food while enjoying the year-round gifts nature has to share us.
I juggle my “Writer Girl” work with a full time career in the financial industry. Lucky for me though, my commute is only seconds. No, I don’t have any beam-me-up-Scotty technology, but I do work from home. A super nice benefit after spending a while with a 80-mile commute each way! Although, it might sound busy, I’ve always been one of those people that has a lot going on, and I like it that way. Plus, I’m a firm believer in there’s time to get everything done that you desire. So I’m a master at making priorities and time for them.
I write love stories from the crossroad of small town and suspense. You might be familiar with my Adams Grove novels. It’ll probably come as no surprise to you that they’re set in a small town here in southern Virginia. Sweet Tea and Secrets and Out of Focus are available now, and coming later this year are, Wedding Cake and Big Mistakes (7/9) and Pecan Pie and Deadly Lies.
You may not be familiar with the suspense novel I co-authored with Phyllis C. Johnson titled, inkBLOT. That’s a cool suspense wrapped around the what-if someone stole all my private information off the internet and used it for no good. The main characters in this book are in their late teens/early twenties (new adult) but readers of all ages have been enjoying it. I loved collaborating with another author on a book. It was really rewarding and I’m working on another one that I’ll be announcing later this year—so stay tuned for more 4-1-1 on that.
Thanks for joining me for a glimpse of a day in my life here on Holland Farm.
Hugs and happy reading~
A Day in the Life of Nancy Naigle
7:30: I’m at my desk at 7:30am sharp every day. During the week my first step is to push the start button on both my personal laptop and my work laptop to wake them up and get them whirring to life. I weigh myself, then head to the kitchen to fix a cup of coffee. (My dear husband sets up the coffee pot each night before he goes to bed so it’s ready to roll as soon as I am!) My work laptop takes twice as long to launch and connect so I do a quick peek of emails on my personal laptop before I start my day. If it’s the weekend...no work laptop push required but I’ll admit that sometimes I forget and go through the daily dance anyway.
10:00am: Coffee is done for the day and I grab a bowl of cereal.
11:00am: Personal email checkpoint. Throughout the whole day I’m jotting down reminders on sticky notes, and book ideas can come at the oddest moments. I have all types of cards, lined, grids, colors, big and small, that I write ideas on and stack them up on my desk so I don’t lose any of the random thoughts.
1:00pm: Check my book rankings and sales from the previous day and update my spreadsheets. Check in with the Dangerous Darlings. (Exclusive street team for a group of five authors! Me, Tracey Devlyn, Adrienne Giordano, Kelsey Browning and Tracy March. You can find out more about the Dangerous Darlings here)
3:00pm: The mailman comes! YAY! I love mail.
5:00pm: Hopefully, I’m powering down the work laptop and switching gears to Writer Girl. I check emails, facebook, twitter and then I consult my sticky note lists of the day to prioritize what’s going to happen tonight.
6:30pm: Dinner. Yes. I cook dinner almost every single night. Mr. Mike is a meat and taters kind of guy so I try to accommodate him with a nice southern meal. Tonight? Steaks on the grill from Spivey’s Market in town – best ribeyes around! –mashed potatoes and brown gravy, steamed broccoli, parker house rolls with butter. His favorites are my meatloaf, fried pork chops, or pan-fried ham steak.
7:00pm: TMZ with Mr. Mike. He never misses it. I guess it’s his 2013 version of reading Parade or People magazine, which he used to do religiously when we first dated. I’m not the fan Mr. Mike is, but the TMZ crew does make me giggle.
7:30pm: Let the multi-tasking begin. I’ll sit in my leather chair in the living room so I can be with my husband, but my laptop is in my lap and I’m either writing, working on marketing materials or hanging out with y’all on social media.
9:30pm: Treadmill for thirty minutes. Something new that I’m trying to combat the Writer Girl booty spread.
10:00pm: I spend the last hour of the evening writing, unless it’s Monday night because I have a date with CASTLE or Wednesday when I have a date with NASHVILLE. If I haven’t gotten my word count in on those nights...I go back and get it done before I go to bed.
*Whenever I’m writing I’m constantly logging my word count. I keep a spreadsheet with daily progress so I can project book completion time. Yes, that’s an occupational hazard from my day job. I’m a Six Sigma Black Belt – so I love statistics and trends and have a passion for really good planning!
